Mount Gambier

The Mount Gambier Crater Lakes area is made up of three main craters containing several lakes including Browne's Lake, Valley Lake, Leg of Mutton Lake and the world famous Blue Lake. The Umpherston Sink Hole is also of interest in the area. Perhaps too far south to be considered "Outback", and perhaps therefore a ring-in.

Umpherston Sinkhole

The Umpherston Sinkhole at Mount Gambier was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards and the topsoil down on the floor of the cave formed the basis for the sunken garden.

The Blue Lake

The Blue Lake is within one of 3 craters of an extinct volcano and serves as Mt Gambier's water supply. Each November it starts it's colour change from a winter blue to turquoise and gradually over the ensuing months returns to its normal colour.

Leg of Mutton Lake

The Leg of Mutton Lake is one of four crater lakes in Mt Gambier, which also includes the famous Blue Lake.
