Mount Buffalo - Mount Buffalo - view over Victorian Alps

Mount Buffalo and the Victorian Alps

21 January 2020

The last of my (3) blogs regarding the disastrous bushfires across south east Australia.

.The Victorian Alps have also been devastated by the bushfires and it is estimated that in excess of a billion native animals and birds, cattle and sheep, would have been wiped out due to the bushfires in north east and eastern Victoria. This is almost too difficult to conceptualise.

Mount Buffalo, which is one of the more accessible mountains within the Victorian Alps, is now threatened by bushfires burning throughout the area. This area is a favourite area for hikers during the Summer months, whereas The Great Alpine Road, which traverses the Victorian Alps passes through Mount Hotham, a favourite resort for skiing.

These are not the only areas of devastation; however, these areas are those which I am familiar with and have photographed and therefore feel able to comment. Hopefully, eventually in the course of time, these beautiful mountains will regenerate, however the tall trees, and the animals, those that may be left, will take a long time to recover. The fires on the border between New South Wales and Victoria have now joined creating 500,000-hectare furnace of fire.

One must hope that considerable thought will be given in the aftermath to what needs to be done to manage the affects of changes in climate, not only in Australia, but globally.
