A Day in the Life of the Flinders Ranges

25 June 2023

The Flinders mountains are a classic example of a folded mountain range. An ancient sea which covered the area for about 300 million years depositing sediment over the area. The Ediacara Hills in the northern Flinders Ranges is the site of discovery of some of the oldest fossil evidence of animal life. Kangaroos, Euros (wallaroos) and emus abound and Brachina Gorge is full of geological history and is home to the vulnerable Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby.

This trip was most enjoyable, shared with my cousin, Jill, and we took along my dog, Florrie.  We drove from my home in Sunbury in Victoria to Hawker in South Australia.  We made arrangements to leave Florrie in Hawker while we travelled with a local tour guide on a one-day commercial tour via the Moralana Scenic Drive into the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. It was a pleasant experience having someone with local knowledge take us to the highlights of the area in the time we had available. I enjoyed the opportunity to relax and experience the silence and grandeur of nature without having to do the groundwork.

Also enjoyable was the journey to and from Hawker, staying in and exploring regional towns along the way.  Although we were not planning on following the South Australian Silo Art trail, four of them popped up along the way and are included under Silo Art (South Australian Silos) on the navigation menu of the website. An added bonus.
